Polyethylene terephthalate (PETP) is a thermoplastic material that can be manufactured with either amorphous or semicrystalline molecular structure, the amorphous type having a glass transparency and having a mechanical strength and a significantly less favorable sliding behavior. In contrast, semicrystalline types are distinguished by a higher level of hardness, stiffness and toughness while having an excellent sliding behavior with low sliding wear.
Due to its good creep resistance and low moisture recovery and excellent dimensional stability, the material is particularly suitable for the production of complex parts that meet the highest level of dimensional stability and surface quality.
Sliding properties
PETP has excellent sliding properties while being highly wear-resistant; thanks to its other properties, PETP is an excellent material for all slip applications subjected to high stresses. This also applies to the fields of application where a high level of moisture or contact with water should be expected. Compared to POM, PETP has a markedly increased wear resistance.
PET-GL type modified in slip behavior
Thanks to the incorporation of a special homogeneously distributed solid lubricant, the PET-GL type is obtained, the sliding properties and the wear resistance have been further improved compared to pure PETP. The integration of the solid lubricant causes this modified type to be particularly suitable for use in situations of dry sliding, subjected to high stresses. The incorporated solid lubricant ensures "self-lubrication" of PET-GL, resulting in an exceptional level of slip and wear properties compared to pure PETP for a significantly improved load capacity (pv - limit value). Moreover, it prevents the effect of sliding and adhesion. At the level of the other properties, no deterioration was observed with respect to the pure PETP.
Weather and chemical resistances
PETP is not resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Under the effect of UV rays, combined with the oxygen of the air, the surface of the material undergoes a modification. In case of prolonged UV radiation, it is recommended to use a black PETP type. PETP is resistant to acids and alkaline solutions of low concentration, saline solutions, perchlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, solvents and surfactants. The highly polar solvents have an irreversible swelling effect. However, acids and alkaline solutions of high concentration, esters, ketones and CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) attack the material.
Fields of use
PETP is used in general mechanical engineering, vehicle construction, precision engineering, electrical / electromechanical and telecommunications industries.
