PA (Polyamide)

There are several types of Polyamides. For technical applications, PA 6, PA 66 and PA 6 G have established themselves as the main representatives of this family of products. Besides the standard types, there is a great variety of polyamides which, derived from the basic types and enriched with different additives, are designed in particular to meet specific applications.

 
In the production processes of semi-finished products, it can be seen that the monomer casting process has a higher degree of crystallinity and therefore a much better property profile compared to the types of extruded polyamides.

Main Caracteristics of PA 6 :

  • high level of strength, hardness, rigidity and tenacity
  • high mechanical damping capacity
  • good resistance to fatigue
  • very high resistance to wear
  • good machinability
  • good sliding properties

 

POLYAMIDE 6 (PA 6)

It is the best known extruded polyamide; it offers a balanced combination of all the characteristic properties of polyamides. However, compared to the types of cast polyamides, this extruded material has a higher degree of moisture recovery, is less wear-resistant and has lower dimensional stability. Furthermore, the manufacturing process makes it possible to produce only half-products of limited size and weight. This restricts constructive opportunities for users.

POLYAMIDE 66 (PA 66)

It is used in the field of small parts and offers, with respect to the PA 6, a slightly higher hardness and wear resistance. Compared to types of cast polyamides, however, this material also has an increased moisture absorption.
As regards the other properties, PA 66 is comparable to the type of PA 6 G standard cast polyamide, but it is nevertheless considerably more expensive than the latter. As with PA 6, the manufacturing process allows only parts of limited size and weight to be produced, which restricts constructive opportunities for users. This is why, in practice, given its best price and the possibility of making parts of virtually unlimited dimensions and weights, PA 6 G has largely replaced PA 66.

POLYAMIDE 66 GF (PA 66 GF)

Compared to virgin polyamide 66, this grade of 30% fiberglass reinforced polyamide has superior mechanical strength, stiffness, creep resistance and dimensional stability while maintaining excellent wear resistance. It also permits higher maximum permissible operating temperatures.

POLYAMIDE 6G (PA 6G)

Its excellent slip properties make PA6G the classic anti-friction material for over-exposed parts, such as bearing rings, slide and guide plates, and gear wheels and pulleys chains. Given the low coefficient of friction, it is usually sufficient to apply only one lubrication during assembly. In many cases the use of lubrication is unnecessary.

POLYAMIDE 6G + OIL (OILAMID)

OILAMID is a modification of PA6G, with a high degree of crystallinity, produced by the monomer casting process specially designed for sliding applications thanks to the incorporation of oils, solid lubricating substances and stabilizing agents.

Its excellent sliding properties make the OILAMID product the specific anti-friction material for structural parts for mechanical and technical use subjected to high stresses of sliding and wear. Thanks to the additives and lubricants contained in the material, a persistent lubricating effect is obtained throughout the application of the life of the part. Compared with the standard quality, the slip coefficient of friction can be reduced to half, resulting in a decrease in friction heating and thus a considerably higher resistance to stress. Moreover, the undesirable predisposition to the slip and adhesion effect is reduced to a minimum.

Its exceptional wear resistance, its lower moisture uptake and its improved dimensional stability result, on the one hand, from the molecular structure characterized by a high degree of crystallinity and, on the other hand, by the incorporation of particular additives. Compared to the standard quality, the reduced friction heat and the reduced coefficient of friction allow use at higher sliding speeds and surface pressures. And the low moisture recovery results in increased dimensional stability and a lesser decrease in mechanical properties due to moisture.

POLYAMIDE 12 (PA 12)

The PA 12 is the ideal material for applications in the field of conveyor and drive technology such as wheels or sprockets.

PA 12 is obtained by anionic reaction, by standing, pressure-free casting method, based on lauric lactam raw material. The process makes it possible to obtain a material characterized by high molecularity and crystallinity and is practically free of internal stresses, which gives it excellent properties compared with other polyamide materials.

Main characteristics of PA 12:

  • extremely low water absorption
  • excellent dimensional stability
  • excellent damping behavior against mechanical vibrations
  • high viscosity for temperatures down to -50 ° C
  • very good resistance to wear
  • low specific gravity
  • good chemical resistance

CALAUMID 612 (PA 6/12 G)

This mixed polyamide manufactured using the two-component standing method of casting, caprolactam and lauric lactam, has a higher resistance to impact and shock than pure cast to the recovery of moisture. 
Moreover, the material is distinguished by improved creep behavior and increased elasticity. In all cases where an increased stress on impact and vibration is expected, and where high fatigue and elasticity requirements are required, CALAUMID 612 will, in view of its semi-rigid profile, be the material of ideal construction.

 

CALAUMID 1200 (PA 12 G)

CALAUMID 1200 is obtained by anionic reaction, by standing, pressure-free casting method, on the base of the lauric lactam raw material. The process makes it possible to obtain a material characterized by high molecularity and crystallinity and is practically free of internal stresses, which gives it excellent properties compared with other polyamide materials.

Its main assets are :

  • Extremely low water absorption (max. 0.9% in normal 25/50 atmosphere)
  • Hence excellent dimensional stability
  • Excellent damping behavior against mechanical vibrations
  • High viscosity also at temperatures up to -50 ° C
  • Very good resistance to wear
  • Low specific gravity
  • Good chemical resistance

These properties make the CALAUMID 1200 material ideal for applications in conveying and drive technology.

 

CALAUMID 612-Fe (PA 6/12 G + METAL CORE) - CALAUMID 1200-Fe (PA 12 G + METAL CORE) 

The combination of CALAUMID materials with a metal core combines the advantages and special properties of both types of materials to make them an exceptional building material. The knurled metal core has a plastic coating cast all around; a geometrical assembly is thus obtained in which the two intimately bonded materials have a perfect friction connection guaranteeing an optimum and reliable transmission to the force.

CALAUMID-Fe is particularly suitable for application in the field of drive elements such as :

  • Gear wheels
  • Chain blocks
  • Track rollers
  • Camshaft discs
  • Stirring mixer wings
  • Pump rollers
